Obituary of Maryann K. Keenan

Maryann K. Keenan Peru - Maryann K. Keenan, 73, of Pleasant Street, Peru, died Friday, October 1, 2010 at her home under the care of her loving family and Hospice of the North Country. She was born on a farm in Chazy Lake, November 20, 1936, the eldest daughter of Ernest, Sr. and Anna (Peryea) King. She attended Dannemora High School, CVPH School of Nursing, Clinton Community College, and SUNY Plattsburgh. Maryann worked at CVPH Medical in Plattsburgh for several years. She retired from Altona Correctional Facility in 2000 following 17 years of service. She married Peter F. Keenan, December 1, 1956 in St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora by the late James Phelon. She was active with girls and boys scouts, was an officer of the Home and School Club of St. Augustine's and coached St. Augustine's basketball team. She and her husband belonged to the North Country Square and bowled in a league for several years. She was commissioned a Steven Minister by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Parker and commissioned a Lay Minister by the Most Rev. Bishop Paul S. Loverde. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a lecturer, a hospital minister and a member of St. Vincent de Paul. She headed up the bereavement committee since the 80s in which she has remained active. She was one of the original organizers of the Apple Fest and has remained an active worker. Maryann was active with the Peru Democrats and a county committee person. She was a board member for the Apple Valley Senior housing, a member of the Clinton County Senior Council and its computer club. She was an officer in CVPH nurse's alumni association, and Court St. Monica Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Survivors include her loving husband of 53 years, Peter F. Keenan of Peru; four children, Paula (Keith) Dew of Peru, Philip (Cheryl) of Ogdensburg, Phyllis of Massachusetts, Peter (Lillian) of Ohio; four grandchildren, Breana and Keely Dew and Scully and Henry Whilhelm; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry (Betty) of Cadyville, Lincoln (Elaine) of Chazy Lake, Bernard (Janette) of Las Vegas; one sister Aurelia McCusker of Cadyville and a former brother-in-law, Carlton McCusker; four sisters-in-law, Loraine (Martin) Heywood of Chazy Lake, Joyce King of Sarasota, Fl., Mary (Bob) Provost of Peru, Geraldine (Loren) Shadrick of Clayburg; and two brothers-in-law, J. Edward Keenan of Warrensburg and Michael Keenan of Peru; 6 aunts and uncles, and many nieces and nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Ernest of Chazy Lake, Russell and Joan of Dover, NH, and Richard of Sarasota, Fl; and six nephews, Butch, Wayne, Russell, Ross, Peter, and David King. Calling hours will be held Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, October 4, 2010 at 11 AM at St. Augustine's Church in Peru with Rev. Alan D. Shnob, parish pastor, celebrating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Donations in her memory may be made to Masses in her memory or the charity of one's choice.
