Obituary of William L. Benware

William L. Benware, Jr. Peru - William L. Benware, Jr. of Moore Drive Peru, died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh. He was born in Piercefield, NY, September 14, 1926, the son of William and Alice (Breen) Benware. William graduated from Keeseville Central School and joined the United States Army where he was involved in the dropping of the bomb on Japan during World War II and was honorably discharge in 1946. Upon his return from active duty he resumed work at Pepsi Cola in Keeseville. He was a route salesman for nearly 40 years, retiring as a dispatcher in 1987. Following retirement he worked for Keeseville Country Gardens. He was a past fire Chief and 1st Assistant Chief with the Keeseville Fire Department. William was a founding member of the department when they broke ground to build the present Fire Station. He was a past charter member of the Keeseville VFW, a past member of the Eugene Santor Keeseville Knights of Columbus, and a member of the AuSable Forks American Legion Post 504. United in marriage with Gladys (Busha) Benware on May 10th, 1952 she died September 3, 1983. Married Shirley Dupra from December 22, 1984 to June 1995. He united in marriage with Gladys V. (Fountain) Akey Benware, September 1995 whom survives him along with his one sister, Doris and brother-in-law, Philip Martino of Keeseville. One son, Scott and Debbie Benware of Keeseville; daughters, Sharron and Albert Sr. Stranahan of Peru, Pam Barber of Peru, Curtis Barber of Beekmantown, and Judy and Patrick Troy of Keeseville; step children, Roland and Pam Akey, John and Jess Akey, Debbie and Dale Miner, Yvette Gough and companion Irwin Otis, Frederick and Sue Akey, and Diane and Francis LaBombard; and several grand children, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 6 to 9pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton Street, Keeseville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, October 1, 2010 at 11am at St. John's Church in Keeseville with Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant, parish pastor, celebrating. Committal prayers, full military honors, and burial will follow in St. John's cemetery in Keeseville.
