Obituary of Bernice I. Barcomb

Bernice Irene Gonyo Barcomb Champlain - Bernice Irene Gonyo Barcomb, 83, of Northern Tier Senior Housing in Champlain, died unexpectedly, Monday, February 1, 2010 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Champlain, August 15, 1926, the daughter of Leander "Leon" and Ruth (Fifield) Trombley. Bernice began her working career at Ayerst McKenna prior to her marriage to her first husband, Charles. Following his death, she worked at Bectel Corp. After the death of her second husband, Roland, through the years, she was employed at The Cabbage Patch, Magram's, Gonyo's Market, the Meals on Wheels Program in Champlain and completed her career at the age of 80 working at Mooers Elementary in the library where she was referred to fondly by the students as "Grandma." Bernice was a member of the Altar Rosary Society in Mooers and the Sacred Heart Secular Franciscan Order of Plattsburgh. Bernice is survived by her children: James Gonyo and wife Martine of Rouses Point; Dale Gonyo and wife Colleen of Morrisonville; John "Jack" Gonyo and wife Donna of Mooers; Carol Hanfield and husband Mark of Rouses Point; Joy Cook and husband Daniel of Kanata, Ontario; Michael Barcomb and wife Katie of Shirley, Massachusetts; Kim LaFave and husband Tony of Altona; stepdaughters Beverly LaFountain and husband Roland of Altona and Grace Laurin and husband Norman of Champlain. Grandchildren and stepgrandchildren: James Gonyo; Jeff Gonyo; Jennifer Bouzidane; Jacqueline Gonyo; Matthew Manor; Elizabeth Manor; Jessica Sears; Shea Gonyo; David Gonyo; Christopher Gonyo; Kelly Gonyo; Shawn Gonyo; Jill Carey Herzog; Sarah Hanfield; Anna Jarrett; Daniel Cook; Jodie Cook; Miranda LaFave; Patrick LaFave; Nicholas LaFave; Elizabeth Barcomb; John Michael Barcomb; Dina Sample; Dean LaFountain; Tracy Posada; Thomas LaFountain; Vicki Moak; Norman John Laurin and 36 great-grandchildren. Also survived by: sisters Rita Roberts of Champlain; Annabelle Ashline of Champlain; Ethel Harvey of N Tonawanda; Doris Neale and husband Gary of Rouses Point; Pauline Roberts and husband Morris of Champlain; sister-in-law Evelyn Gonyo of Mooers; Pat Wood and husband Stan of Plattsburgh; Doris Barcomb of Altona; Regina Barcomb of Mooers Forks; brothers Donald Trombley of Medford, Oregon; Hubert Trombley and wife Gertrude of Champlain; brothers-in-law Gerald Bushey of Utica; Jay Gonyo and wife Shirley of Mooers; Harry Gonyo and wife Bonnie of Mooers and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Charles P. Gonyo; second husband Roland E. Barcomb; sisters Dorothy Trombley, Helen Trombley and Mae Trombley; brother Orville Trombley; sisters-in-law Margaret Monette and Irene Bushey; brother-in-law Earl Gonyo and Arnold Gonyo. Bernice will be missed by her family and many close friends. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 4 to 8pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. Mooers Knights of Columbus will meet at the Hamilton Funeral Home for a 7:45pm service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 10am at St. Mary's Church in Champlain with Rev. James A. Delbel, parish pastor, celebrating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mooers. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Mary's Academy or the Champlain Rescue Squad.
