Obituary of Kenneth L. Babbie

Kenneth L. BabbieMooers - Kenneth L. Babbie, 85, formerly of the Hemmingford Road, Mooers, passed away Monday, September 21, 2009 at the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility in Plattsburgh.He was born in Mooers, March 3, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Laura (Monette) Babbie.Ken graduated from Mooers Central School in 1942, then joined the Army shortly after to serve in WWII. He was a gunner in the 5th Army Mortar Battalion. He spent three years overseas in Northern Africa and Italy until the end of WWII. He earned a merit for his service to his country. Upon discharge from the service, Ken came back to Mooers and worked at Diamond Match Mill in Plattsburgh for a year. He left Diamond Match to work for Dairylea Milk Plant in West Chazy. He took over his father's milk hauling business soon after. In 1960, he went into partnership with Norman Peryer of West Chazy and formed Babbie and Peryer Bulk Milk Hauling. In 1989, after 29 years in business and at the age of 65, Ken retired. He spent his retirement years taking care of his home and family.Ken married the former Mary Virginia Chakey, also from Mooers, June 28, 1952. They lived in Mooers all their lives together. Ken was a member of St. Joseph's parish in Mooers, the American Legion, and VFW Post 1618 in Champlain.Survivors include his six children, daughter, Mary LaValley and husband Joe of Dewey, AZ, son, Steven Babbie and wife Lisa of Fayetteville, GA, son, Christopher Babbie and wife Sheila of Champlain, son, John Babbie and companion Aletha Vanderwiel of Malone, daughter, Sharon Beggs and husband Gerry of West Chazy, son, Matthew and wife Jane of Cumberland Head; twelve grandchildren, Jason Babbie and wife Jennifer, Melissa Babbie, Amy Babbie, Lori Babbie-Hart and husband Erick, Luke, Kyle, and Katie Babbie, Daniel Beggs and wife Amber, David Beggs, Thomas, Allison, and Tyler Babbie; one sister, Theresa Miller and her husband George of North Fort Meyers, FL; four nieces and one nephew.Ken was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife of 46 years "Virginia", who passed away on December 2, 1998.Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 24, 2009 from 4 to 7pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 10am at St. Joseph's Church in Mooers with Rev. Gerald A. Cerank, parish pastor, celebrating. Committal prayers, full military honors, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mooers Fire Department or the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility.Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Rd, Mooers. 236-4747
