Charles D. Smith Plattsburgh - Charles D. Smith, 65, of Schuyler Terrace, Plattsburgh, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at his home. He was born in Plattsburgh, June 12, 1943 the son of George W. and Julia J. (Hutchins) Smith. Charles graduated from Peru High School in 1963. He was an Army veteran having served during Vietnam. He was honorably discharged March 5, 1965. Charles worked for the Plattsburgh City School District for nearly 30 years. He retired in 1999. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. Survivors include his loving wife of 8 years, Diane J. (Richards) Smith, whom he married June 11 2000 in Plattsburgh; his beloved mother, Julia Smith of Peru; two daughters, Kimberly Dipaula of Deerfield, NJ, and Lisa Garrow of Plattsburgh; one grandson, David Hathaway, Jr. of Plattsburgh; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Pam Smith of Brushton; three close friends, Steve York of Plattsburgh, David Hathaway, Sr. of Plattsburgh, and Craig Lawrence of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, George W. Smith; and one niece, Jennifer Smith. A gathering for family and friends will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 11am to Noon at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. Time for reflections will begin at 11:45am with military honors to follow. A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Peru Cemetery Inc. Donations in his memory may made to the Adirondack Humane Society, Plattsburgh, NY. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
