Obituary of Warren J. Garrand

Warren J. Garrand Mooers - Warren J. Garrand, 86, of Depot Street, Mooers died Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Mooers, July 3, 1922 the son of Alfonso and Helen (Tulley) Garrand. Warren grew up in Mooers and graduated from Mooers Central High School in 1939. Following high school, he entered the United States Army, November 27, 1942. He was a highly decorated WWII veteran having received several medals including the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged December 1, 1945. Warren was a lifelong dairy farmer in Mooers and together with his brother, Wayne, owned and operated Garrand Bros. Farm on the Barcomb Road in Mooers. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Mooers and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Warren was very generous with his time as a local handyman, many relied on his help when they were in need. He was an avid reader especially about the history of the Civil War and the Revolutionary War. Warren is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita (Pelkey) Garrand, whom he married May 26, 1956 at the Church of the Holy Name in AuSable Forks; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Brian and Margaret Garrand of Mooers, Kevin and Dori Garrand of Moline, Illinois, Scott and Carol Garrand of Frederick, Maryland; and Mark Garrand of Plattsburgh; two grandchildren, Benjamin Garrand and wife Lisa and Jason Garrand and fiance, Elizabeth Rock, all of Plattsburgh; one great-granddaughter, Layla; plus two twin great-grandchildren on the way; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Rodney and Mary Ellen Garrand of Mooers, and Arlan Garrand of Mooers; one sister, Joan Tetreault of Plattsburgh; one sister-in-law, Anita Garrand of Mooers; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Wayne Garrand; one brother-in-law, Wendell Tetreault; and one sister-in-law, Luella Garrand. At Warren's request there will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, November 21, 2008 at 3pm at St. Joseph's Church in Mooers with Rev. Gerald A. Cerank, pastor, celebrating. Full military honors will follow outside of the church. Burial will be held at a later date in the parish cemetery in Mooers. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Joseph's Church or the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center in Plattsburgh.
