Obituary of Daniel J. Meegan

Daniel J. Meegan Keeseville - Daniel J. Meegan, 83, of Water Edge, Keeseville died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility. He was born in Burlington, VT, September 27, 1925, the son of Daniel J. Sr. and Edith (Sumner) Meegan. His early years were spent in the Burlington area. After high school he served in the Navy during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return to Burlington he enrolled in college. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1950, with a degree in education and later a Master's Degree. Dan continued graduate studies in the fields of counseling and school administration at Syracuse University, Siena College, and Plattsburgh State University. Dan was a high school teacher and coach in Hinesburg, Vermont for 3 years following college graduation. He then moved to Keeseville High School where he taught high school social studies and served as a guidance counselor. His final years in education were spent as Middle School Principal and later as High School Principal at AuSable Valley Central School. His work with students at the Valley brought him many years of fulfillment and enjoyment, as Dan truly loved young people. He was a member of the Keeseville Kiwanis Club, Keeseville Elks Club, served as a Board of Trustee member for Clinton Community College for many years, and belonged to the Catholic Community of Keeseville. Dan enjoyed traveling, historical touring, reading Civil War materials, golfing, attending sporting events, hunting, fishing, following the Boston Red Sox, telling elaborate stories, and countless jokes, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. His wife, three children and their spouses were dear to him and the grandchildren were his true pride and joy. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley (Prairie) Meegan, whom he married on June 24,1950 in Alburg, Vermont; his children and their spouses David and Cheryl Meegan of Sacramento, California, Judy and Dan Hoey of Peru, Kevin and Lisa Meegan of Charlotte, N.C., his dear grandchildren Lauren and Michael Meegan, Patrick, Meaghan, and Tyler Hoey, Brendan, Brian, Casey and Will Meegan, as well as special in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Dan was predeceased by his parents; Edith Meegan Davis and Daniel J. Meegan, and a sister; Doris Bailey. There will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 2pm at St. John's Church in Keeseville with Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant, pastor, celebrating. Committal prayers, military honors, and burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Daniel J.
