Obituary of Bernard A. Jarvis

Bernard A. Jarvis Peru - Bernard A. Jarvis, 82, of Holden Ave, Peru and formerly of the Jarvis Road, died Monday, September 29, 2008 at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Peru, August 8, 1926, the son of Arthur and Nora (Buckley) Jarvis. Brought up on a farm on Jarvis Road, and graduated from Peru Central School in 1944. Later that same year he enlisted in the US Navy fighting in the Pacific Theater on the USS Dayton, a light cruiser as a turret gun captain during WWII, and honorably discharged in 1946. Upon discharge, he was employed by Kodak and Underwood Typewriter Company in Rochester, NY. After returning to the area, he was employed by G.W. Parker, a Ford car dealership in Peru. In 1954, he started Peru Farm Center and remained there as owner and president until his retirement in 1990. Bernard was a member of the Peru Fire Department for 40 years. He served as a Fire Commissioner for many years, while acting as Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for 16 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Trustee of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Peru. Bernard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen E. (Boswell) Jarvis, whom he married on January 25, 1947 in Rochester; his four children, Barbara Bungo and Joanne Jarvis, both of Houston, TX, Mark Jarvis and Amanda Hapeman, and Thomas Jarvis and wife Nanci, all of Peru; one sister, Katherine Thompson of Odenton, MD; seven grandchildren, Elise and Jonathan Bungo, Lauren and Brent Jarvis, Karri Raposa and husband Tom, Benjamin Jarvis and Ryan Hapeman; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Bill Murphy; one brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Catherine Jarvis and a dearly loved grandson, Adam Allen Jarvis who died December 23, 2006. Calling hours will be held Thursday, October 2, 2008 from 4 to 7pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, October 3, 2008 at 11am at St. Augustine's Church in Peru with Rev. Alan D. Shnob, pastor, celebrating.
