Obituary of Donald R. Hanlon

Donald R. "Don" Hanlon Peru - Donald R. "Don" Hanlon, 79, of Elm Street, Peru, died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh, March 4, 1929, the son of Edward and Mary (Ryan) Hanlon. Don graduated from Peru High School. Following graduation he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, from November 14, 1950 until his honorable discharge October 1, 1952. Don worked for more than 40 years for several of the local Grand Union Stores. He lastly was manager/fishmonger of the seafood dept. at the Plattsburgh Plaza Grand Union. Don was active in the community, especially the Peru Fire Dept. He was the longest living active member of the Peru Fire Dept. at more than 60 years. He was a former commissioner and past assistant chief and was quite proud to have been selected as Clinton Country Fireman of the Year. Don was also a former member of the local Elks organizations and American Legion. He loved to garden but preferred to gift all the vegetables to neighbors and friends rather than savor them himself. Throughout his life he was a cat lover. One of Don's recent pleasures was having coffee and donuts at the Apple Blossom Florist, he even had his own chair. Survivors include one son, Michael Hanlon and his companion, Cher Kirby of Peru; Cher's children, Austin and Justine; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; loving wife of 51 years, Lucille M. "Lou" Hanlon, October 28, 2007; one brother, Francis Hanlon; and one sister, Katherine Howard. Calling hours will be held Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 2 to 5pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, September 15, 2008 at 11am at St. Augustine's Church in Peru with Rev. Alan D. Shnob, pastor, celebrating. Committal prayers, full military honors, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the family to be used at their discretion.
