
Obituary of Nomia M. Thornton

Nomia M. Thornton, 80, of Champlain and formerly of DeKalb Junction, passed away peacefully after a long and valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia on April 21, 2023.
She was born in DeKalb, NY on November 13, 1942, the daughter of Andrew and Mary
(Childs) Gonyea.
Nomia was a 1961 graduate of Hermon-DeKalb Central School and attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, NY. On July 13, 1963 she was united in marriage with Anias (Sam) Thornton at St. Henry’s Church in DeKalb Junction. She retired from the St. Lawrence County One Stop Career Center where she was an employment and Training Counselor.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 59 years, Anias; their children, Tina Thornton (Chris Wrasse) of Los Angeles, CA; Teresa (Jose) Acostamadiedo of Cumberland Head, NY; Anias III (Kerry) Thornton of Mooers, NY; and her son-in-law Louis (Heather) DiTaranto of Temple Terrace, FL; her grandchildren, Christopher & Brandon DiTaranto, Christina Wrasse, Olivia, Joe & Hunter Acostamadiedo and Alexis & Kaelyn Thornton. She is also survived by her dear sister, Barbara Peck of Gouverneur and her brothers, William (Kathy) Gonyea of Hermon and Ken (Patty) Gonyea of Lambertville, Michigan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Orilla; her brothers, Harold and George; and her dear daughter, Mary Thornton DiTaranto.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 86 Main Street, Champlain, with Rev. William G. Reamer, celebrating. Burial in the parish cemetery will be private.
The family wishes to recognize and express their heartfelt gratitude to Nomia’s caregivers: Marilyn Daily, Dina Dragoon & Tinna Bissette and to her entire hospice team, especially to her nurse Heather Newell, RN.
