Sherry E. Dobbs, 85, of Elm Street, Peru, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2023 at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, with his loving children by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh on June 16, 1937 the son of Sherry M. and Leona (Peryea) Dobbs. Sherry graduated from Peru High School in 1955, a standout athlete in basketball and soccer. After graduating high school, he joined the US Marine Corps, attending boot camp at Parris Island and later serving in Japan and the Philippines. A highlight of his time in military service was climbing to the top of Mt. Fuji. Sherry later attended SUNY Plattsburgh and went on to work in the NYS Department of Corrections, retiring as a sergeant after a career spanning over 30 years. In 1966 he met Carol Brennan, the love of his life, at Hunter Mountain Ski Resort. They married in November 1966, eventually moving back to his hometown of Peru to raise their family. They explored the world together, visiting family across the US, France, Spain, Mexico, and Canada. He continued that spirit of adventure after her passing by visiting Ireland and Alaska and spending some winters in Florida. Sherry was an avid outdoorsman and achieved the accomplishment of becoming an Adirondack 46er. He enjoyed gardening, listening to music, and reading and was an avid sports enthusiast. As a music lover, he played the accordion and often was in attendance at concerts and festivals. He loved spending time at his cousin’s farm. Sherry was an active member of his community, including being a member of the Peru Lions Club, and lifelong member of St. Augustine’s Church. He was known for his kind and generous spirit; always ready with a smile and a funny story. In his proudest role as “Pop”, his great enjoyment was spending time with family, especially his two grandchildren, John and Caroline. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Elizabeth (Dobbs) and husband, Jim Hoenscheid, Sherry Dobbs Jr. and wife, Trish;, Michael Dobbs and partner, John Weafer; beloved grandchildren, John and Caroline; as well as siblings, Jerry Dobbs and wife, Carmen; Donna (Dobbs) and husband, Ed Eisele; Linda (Dobbs) and husband, Walter Freithaler; and sister-in-law, Pat Barone.
