To my best hunting buddy. It has been a long journey
for you and I. Meeting for the first time in June 1972. Who
would have guessed we would stay in touch all these years.
Our enjoyment of hunting, fishing and telling sea stories
has kept us in touch all these years. I will never forget the
good times we had. Don't forget the encounter you,
Bob and Lucy Joyner had with the North Woods Law.
To bad that one wasn't filmed for television. That would
give us a good laugh every time. I know you are in
the happy hunting ground. The Thompson family
misses you.

I was a recently promoted Chief Petty Officer when I reported aboard the USS BILLFISH in 1984. Master Chief Bob Russell was the Senior Enlisted for the Nuclear Engineering Department. I learned a great deal from Master Chief Russell about Leadership and the Navy that they just don't teach in any school. Master Chief Russell had a fabulous sense of humor that everyone on-board enjoyed. Rest in Peace Shipmate. HAND SALUTE!!!

Master Chief Russell came aboard the USS Billfish at about the same time I did, when I was a freshly minted Ensign out of subschool. He told me a story about his time in LMET school that has stayed with me my entire life. It seems the Instructor at LMET wanted to call him "Bob". Master Chief instructed him that he wished to be addressed as Master Chief, as he had worked for the title for 23 years and he was now entitled to be addresssed that way. The instructor gave in.
This wasn't just a funny story, but a life lesson about treating others, whether they are higher or lower than you on any particular chain, with respect and dignity. Ever since then, I have always asked people how they wish to be addressed, how their name is pronounced or spelled, and it has always served me well.
Rest your oar, Master Chief. We have the watch.

Q: Describe where Robert worked and what they did
A: I met Bob in the late 1960's in Portsmouth New Hampshire. We were both U.S. Navy submariners who aside from our submarine duties enjoyed hunting and fishing together. We were also fellow Navy recruiters working together out of the Boston MA district from 1972 - 1976. Bob's recruiting territory encompassed the vast area of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. He loved what he did and he excelled at it. He loved the U.S. Navy and retired after 25 years as a Master Chief Petty Officer. I am proud to have known him.

May you rest in peace, and, know that the imprints you left in our hearts are forever lasting! Love you,

Bob, if you only knew how much you meant to your step children. You were the only father they ever knew. They tried to stay close. I will always remember our visits!! May you rest in peace.
