Obituary of Robert H. Rulfs

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sorrow in our hearts that we acknowledge and share with the community the passing of Robert H. Rulfs, at the age of 93. Born in Valhalla, NY in 1929 to his parents, Herman and Sarah (Dirksen) Rulfs, he began his love of farming at a young age. With rabbits for pets and many, many chickens, he would make the rounds around Valhalla to his customers with the eggs. After attending Farmingdale College on Long Island with the financial help of his Uncle Henry in 1952 he bought the farm and 4 cows on Bear Swamp Road with $80 left in his pocket he trudged forward. In 1954, he married Edith Dew. They raised 4 children. With the birth of the fourth child it was determined that Edith had MS, Multiple Sclerosis. It was a serious and debilitating disease. Our mother required round the clock health care by age 49 in 1980. Our Dad by this point was caring for the orchard; in addition the Northway had cut the farm in half so his herd of dairy cows were now over on Union Road where he had bought a second farm. After tending to the needs of his animals and orchard he would head for Meadowbrook to see his wife. He celebrated his 70th year in Peru as he turned 93 in March. He's never forgotten the help he received from other farmers in town when he arrived as a newcomer. From Virgil Forrence who became his Best Man when he got married, George Curtis, his close friend, Kermit Irwin, Marcy Mulberry, the Arthur family and more. Richard Howard has endured as an employee 50 years at Rulfs. He was dedicated to our father. The two of them fought mother nature to make sure the crops were healthy and ready on time. Our father is survived by his children, Jon, Doug, Patti Sheehan and son-in-law, Kevin, and Wendi Cahill and son-in-law, Stephen. He is also survived by grandchildren: Shannon Wilkins, Amanda Whisher, Caitlin McKee, Michael Rulfs, Laura Lashway, Ashley Richner, Trista Sheehan, Trever Sheehan, Lincoln Cahill, and Daniel Cahill. He also has 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nephews, Bob and Chris Quale of Connecticut, and Keith, Jeff, and Greg Dew. And niece, Sarah Morgan of CT. The friends who survive him are too numerous to mention. He loved the North Country. Called it God's Country. He loved the people as much as he loved watching the corn germinate and grow. He is predeceased by his lifelong love, Edith, as well as his parents. During the pandemic, he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Ted Quale of Connecticut as well as his childhood friend, Larry Davis of the Finger Lakes. A public celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2022 from 3 to 7 pm at Livingood's Restaurant in Peru. Entombment will be held at a later date in God's Acre Cemetery in Peru. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, 6520 N. Lauderdale Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33309-2132. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
