Obituary of Wallace Harry Day

Wallace Harry “Wally” Day, 76, of State Route 9, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh, with his loving family by his side. He was born Nov. 28th, 1945, to Norman and Leona Day in Plattsburgh, NY. He graduated from Peru Central School in 1963. Wally graduated class of 1967 from Cornell University. After 3 years of dating, he married R. Monica (Tilley) Day on Sept.14, 1968 at North Congregational Church in Amherst, Mass. Wally grew up on the family’s Indian Bay Farm. In 1957, when he was only 12, Day Brothers began the transition to selling boats and other recreational vehicles. As a prominent local businessman, he ran the boat business for 50 years. Wally worked as a dock master for Lake Champlain Transportation Company in his retirement years and often could be found in the booth at the Port Kent crossing each summer into his early 70s. Wally was an integral part of the Volunteer fire service in Clinton County since joining the South Plattsburgh Fire Department in 1969. He quickly rose to the rank of Fire Chief, a position he held for 15 years. Wally spent 26 years on the board of fire commissioners, serving as chairman until the present day. Wally was appointed a Clinton County Deputy Fire Coordinator in 1996 and worked as a member of the Fire Investigation Unit. To the greater fire community, he will forever be known as Car 17. His knowledge and leadership in the fire service will be remembered by many for many years. Wally served on many boards over the years including the Town of Plattsburgh Zoning Board of Appeals and the New York State Association of Fire Districts. In addition to dedicating many years to the fire service, he was an avid rail buff with a large collection of train memorabilia. Although he loved all train history (full scale), he was especially fond of the D&H Railroad. Wally was an active member of the D&H related “Bridge Line Historical Society” where he also served as a member of the board of directors. Being a season ticket holder, Wally was a huge supporter of Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey for over 36 years. He rarely missed a home game standing in section D at center ice on the rail. He also made numerous trips over the years to away games. LET’S GO CARDS!!!! Wally and Monica loved to travel, especially for anything that involved trains. They traveled across the US and Canada by train on numerous occasions as well as touring Scotland, Wales and England on the rails. Wally is survived by his wife, Monica; children: son, Eric Day and wife Melissa and his daughter, Christina Zielinski and husband Eric. He has three grandsons, Matthew Day, Riley and Nathan Zielinski all whom he adored and was very proud of. Calling hours will be held Friday, May 6, 2022 from 1 to 4 at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A continued celebration of his life will follow at 5 pm at South Plattsburgh Station 1, to honor his many dedicated years in fire service. All are welcome to attend.
