Obituary of John Gillespie Phillips, Jr.
John Gillespie "Jack" Phillips, Jr., 76, of Second Street, Port Kent, died Monday, April 18, 2022, at his home under the loving care of his family and High Peaks Hospice. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey, October 5, 1945, the son of John Gillespie, Sr. and Evelyn (Rush) Phillips. John graduated from Northwood School in Lake Placid in 1964. He attended Hartwick College in Oneonta. He married the former Cheryl Morrow, November 20, 1965, in Plattsburgh. John worked for Bill McBride Chevrolet in Plattsburgh for a few years and then started working for the NYS Attorney General's Office in Rochester. He was in Rochester for six years prior to transferring to Plattsburgh. He retired following nearly 30 years of public service as a Senior Investigator. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Plattsburgh and founding member of the Adirondack Hockey Club and was a long-time hockey, little league, football coach. John enjoyed time with his grandchildren and all of their activities. He would rarely miss any of their athletic or school events. Left to cherish the memory of John are, his loving wife of 56 years, Cheryl Phillips of Port Kent; two sons, Jack (Wendy) Phillips of Peru, and James Phillips of Plattsburgh; five grandchildren, Emily, Tyler, Morgan, Michael, and Abigail Phillips; sister, Lois (Peter) Chiefari; brother, Edward (Susan) Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, April 29, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. John's family would like to offer a heartfelt "thank you" to Essex County HCR and High Peaks Hospice of Essex County. Donations in his memory may be made to ALS Research Fund and mailed to the Fletcher Allen Health Care, Department of Neurology, 111 Colchester Ave. - 4610H4, Burlington, VT, 05401.
