Obituary of Richard J. LaValley

Richard J. LaValley of Telegraph Road, Peru died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 29, 2022 in Alachua, Florida. Rick, as he was known, was born in Plattsburgh on May 3, 1949 and was raised in Keeseville, the eldest son of Rufus and Irene (Spooner) LaValley. Rick proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 – 1971. After returning home from the Vietnam War, he had a career in plumbing and heating and worked at various supply companies. However, his passion was for antiques. Rick was a self-proclaimed wheeler-dealer and his extensive knowledge of local history and collectables made him a resource for many. At any given time, you could be sure Rick had watches, dishes, books, jewelry, cameras, records, baseball cards and a variety of other novelties available for sale. He had a special charm and constantly made friends with the people who crossed his path. Rick loved the Adirondacks and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and golfing. He took the back roads every time. He had a gigantic heart and over the years he contributed to his community through work with the Masons, Shriners and the VFW. Rick loved his family and was the life of family gatherings. He is survived by his longtime partner Betty Harris; children, Michael LaValley, April (John) Perroni and Yara LaValley; grandchildren Aston, Morgan, Paige and Jack; brother Terry (Cara) LaValley; sisters Avis (Ronald) Foster and Deborah Wells; many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends like Doug Evens. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Mary Banker and Clara LaHue and brothers-in-law Harry LaHue and Michael Wells. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate with Rick one last time on Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 9 to 10:30 AM at Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton Street, Keeseville, NY 12944.
