Obituary of Cornelius Van Splinter

Cornelius "Neil" Van Splinter, 93, of the Arnold Road, Plattsburgh, died Friday, January 7, 2022 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh, with his family by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh, August 2, 1928, the son of Andrew and Gertrude (Giroux) Van Splinter. He attended school in New Jersey and later graduated from Clinton Community College with an Associate's Degree. Neil served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1947. He married to Ernestine Van Splinter on December 14, 1950 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh by the Rev. George Brisson, together with family they celebrated sixty years of marriage together in December of 2010 with a dinner party at the Butcher Block Restaurant in Plattsburgh. Neil worked for Imperial Wallcoverings for many years prior to retiring in 1990. He was a member, former secretary, and house committee member of the Keeseville Elks 2072, and a member of the St. Augustine's Knights of Columbus. Neil enjoyed vegetable gardening and was known for his extra large and extra sweet tomatoes, and also enjoyed hunting. Left to cherish the memory of Neil are, his children, Kathleen (Richard) Miller, and John Van Splinter all of Peru; grandchildren, Jennifer Miller of Peru, Heather Miller-Granger (David) of Peru, Jessica Van Splinter-Lily (Travis) of Plattsburgh, Danielle Van Splinter (Cody Cody) of Dannemora, and Corey Van Splinter of Cleveland, Ohio; six great-grandchildren, Colby, Jordyn, Ian, Molly, Neal, and Levi; siblings, Robert Armstrong (Nancy) of Keeseville, and Elizabeth Moynahan of Hudson Falls; Ernestine's siblings, Clarissa Stone of Plattsburgh, and Gerald Rushford of Plattsburgh; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by son, Neal Van Splinter; brothers, Andrew, Jacob, and Francis Van Splinter, and James Armstrong. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2022, from 10 to Noon at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 pm at St. Augustine's Church in Peru. Committal prayers and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Augustine's Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
