I have so many memories of Norine:
She loved the color yellow.
She loved The Beach Boys.
She had a pet duck.
She, Margaret, Carolyn, Sue and I were practically joined at the hip all through high school. We would wait for one another in the morning by her locker and then proceed en masse to the girls’ locker room where there was a big mirror in front of which we could fix our hair and makeup.
She was a wonderful conversationalist. She and I used to talk on the phone nearly every day after school. One weekend night we talked for three hours.
We’d hash over everything: boys, parents, teachers, classmates. No matter what any of us were going through, she was there for us.
We used to enjoy going out, especially to a disco place called Uncle Sam’s on Grand Island. It had a big lit-up dance floor right out of Saturday Night Fever. We would dress in Danskins with matching skirts and Candees high-heeled sandals and dance the night away while drinking big red frozen drinks called firecrackers.
A writer whose name I can’t remember said that we carry everyone with us who has gone on before us. I will carry Norine with me for the rest of my life.
