Obituary of Rose Marie Fine

Rose Marie Fine passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021. She was born August 29, 1934 in Eckley Pennsylvania to Eva and Anthony Sulkosky. Rose graduated from Foster Township High School, Freeland, PA in 1952. She went on to study Nursing at Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Allentown, PA earning her RN in 1955. She worked for another year at Sacred Heart Hospital until she enlisted in the United State Air Force Nurse Corp in 1956. She was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX for two years and served as a pediatric nurse. Her service continued at Tachikawa AFB in Tachikawa, Japan. This was where she met Dr. John Fine who also served in the Air Force Medical Corp. During her two-year tour there, she had many adventures including travel to Hong Kong, Thailand, The Philippines, and Taiwan. A highlight was a journey to climb Mount Fuji where she reached the summit just at sunrise. She was honorably discharged in 1960. She was proud to be able to attend the dedication of the Women in the Military Services for America Memorial ceremony in Washington DC with her fellow women veterans in 1997. Rose married her husband, John, in 1960 in Sacramento, California, and supported him while he completed his medical residency. She continued her career in nursing, working in her husband's medical office when they first moved to Essex, NY. She then worked for the Elizabethtown Community Hospital (ECH) from 1978 -1998. Our mother spent her final days in the hospital where she was lovingly cared for as she had cared for her own patients many years ago. We are grateful for the compassion everyone at ECH gave her and our family. During her life she was active in the Essex community. She served on the board of the Essex Town Library. She was a member of the Essex Fire Department, and was an EMT on the ambulance squad. She was also a prominent Town Mother, one of the parents of the town kids. She was especially known for her medical advice when illness and injury happened. She was predeceased by her husband, parents and four siblings, Pauline, Helen, Albert [Goesh] and Eva. Rose is survived by her children and their families: Mariko Fine-Lease, her husband, John, and three children: John Anthony, Paul Henry and Tekla Rose; Harry Fine, his wife, Caroline, and two children: Noah Kent, and Tara Rose; and Anthony Fine. Eve Bailey, her husband, Nicholas, and their son, Harlow Nicholas. Upon becoming a Granny, her greatest joys came from attending her Grandchildren's various events, cheering them on quite proudly in her own spirited fashion. She hoped to be remembered for her love for her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was devoted to them above all else, and they were her most important source of happiness and the light of her life. We would like to thank the people who worked so tirelessly to help our mother in the final stages of her life. You made her time more comfortable, and blessed her with the gift of remaining in her home and close to her children and grandchildren. We couldn't have done it without your care and compassion. Rose's family will greet folks on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 from 10 to 11 AM at St. Joseph's Church in Essex. As 11 AM approaches, members of the Nursing Honor Guard will offer the Nurses Prayer and Nursing Tributes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM. Committal prayers, military honors, and burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
