Obituary of Emil Francis Karkoski

Keeseville - Emil Francis Karkoski, 86, formerly of Keeseville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 11, 2021, at UVM Health Network – CVPH in Plattsburgh with his loving family by his side. Emil Francis Karkoski was born on June 22, 1934 in Hampton, N.Y., the sixth of nine children to Emil M. Karkoski and Frances (Kantorowski) Karkoski. Emil spent his formative years in Mineville where the family moved when he was a young child. He loved participating in sports and lettered in Football, Basketball, and Baseball in high school. He was a 1952 graduate of Mineville High School. In January 1953, Emil enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After tech school, he was assigned to a mobile training detachment at Lowry AFB, CO and spent most of his assignment traveling to Air Force Bases in the Northern part of the US and even to Thule AFB, Greenland. In December 1956, he completed his enlistment and went to work for the General Electric Company in Utica, NY. In 1959, he met Margaret Claire Henry and they married on June 11, 1960 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in New Hartford, NY. That same year he was transferred to the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, MA. In 1963, Emil left GE and started his own business selling and repairing Televisions. This business morphed into Champlain Communications Incorporated which was located in Keeseville and specialized in the sales and service of commercial two-way radios. In 1982, Emil sold the business and started in the air traffic control system field. He worked in succession for AVCO Services Corporation (installing air traffic control systems), then Denro Labs (manufacturer of the systems) and finally Raytheon Corporation (maintainer of the systems) until retirement. Emil was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer and played in local softball leagues for many years and was a past member of Keeseville Knights of Columbus, and Keeseville Elks Club 2072. You can't believe how much you learn from watching your dad. We can all fix everything now. Thanks dad. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Karkoski of Keeseville, and four children, Kevin Karkoski (Monika) of Olympia, WA, Michael Ozbayrak (Kaan) of Granite Bay, CA, Paul Karkoski (Karen) of Plattsburgh, and Karen Duncan (Pierce) of Durango, CO; nine grandchildren, Gavin, Landon, Maeve, Mannix, Eleanor, Julia, Kristen, Mikayla and Kelly. He is also survived by sister, Frances Williford and brothers, Thomas Karkoski and Daniel Karkoski (Melinda); sister-in-law, Rose Karkoski; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Agnes Harris (Garf), Mary Hanchett (Jay), Emily Ida (Dominic); brothers, Jacob Karkoski (Libby) and Zig Karkoski; and sister-in-law, Katherine Karkoski and brother-in-law, Thomas Williford. The family would like to thank the staff at Champlain Valley Senior Community for the wonderful care they provided while he lived there. They also would like to thank the staff on the 4th and 5th floors of the UVM Health Network-CVPH for the wonderful care they provided. A mass and interment will be held later in the summer at Immaculate Conception Church in Keeseville. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Emil may be made to the American Stroke Association at 300 5th Avenue, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451 or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton Street, Keeseville, 834-7667.
