Obituary of Richard W. Gushlaw

Richard W. “Dick” Gushlaw, 85, of the Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, February 6, 2021, at his home, with loving family by his side. He was born in Poughkeepsie, July 8, 1935, the son of Ernest and Marie (Bernardi) Gushlaw. He attended Plattsburgh High School. He married the former Sylvia St. John, January 9, 1954 in St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh. Dick worked for Armour Meat Packing in Plattsburgh, drove truck for Bouyea Bakery for several years, and drove for Dorn's and continued to work as the company transitioned to Oneida Trucking Company. He lastly worked at Plattsburgh Quarry for several years until his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Plattsburgh until its closer and then attended weekend Mass at St. Alexander's in Morrisonville. As a boy he excelled at speed skating. Later in life he drove race car, predominately at Airborne Speedway. He also enjoyed camping, and wintering in Florida with his wife. Left to cherish the memory of Dick are, his loving wife of 67 years, Syliva Gushlaw; three children, Cathy (Jack) Sullivan, Richard "Rick" (Dawn) Gushlaw, and Randy (Brenda) Gushlaw; grandchildren, Meghan and Nathan Sullivan, Josh and Kris Gushlaw, Tom Rocque, and Danielle, Brianne, Tiana, and Derek Gushlaw; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by granddaughter, Jessica Rocque; and brother and sister-in-law, Ernest, Jr. and Frances. At Dick’s request there will be no public services. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
