Obituary of Denise P. Houle

Plattsburgh - Denise Houle, 90 passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan.31, 2021 at UVM Health Network -CVPH, Plattsburgh. She was born in Montreal, Canada on Aug.8, 1930, the daughter of Antoinette (Gagne) and Edouard Guindon. She married Lucien Houle of Drummondville, Quebec on Dec.26, 1953 and was married for 39 years before Lucien's passing in 1993. Soon after marrying they moved to Keeseville, NY where they raised their four children. Denise spent a major portion of her life volunteering for numerous organizations wherever she lived. During the 40 years that Denise lived in Keeseville she was an active member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus where she spent many years volunteering with their catering and bingo concession. She also dedicated many years as an active member of the Keeseville Volunteer Firefighter's Auxiliary. Denise worked ten years for the Village of Keeseville as a deputy clerk and retired in 1992. In 1998 Denise moved to Lake City FL where she lived for seven years. During that time she volunteered at the Lake City Medical Center gift shop. Then in 2005 Denise moved back to the North Country and settled in Plattsburgh where she remained until her death. Again she became a dedicated volunteer spending many hours working for the R.S.V.P. and the Plattsburgh Animal Shelter thrift shop. As a member of the St. Peter's Church, she also worked in their soup kitchen for several years. Denise was a very outgoing lady who thrived in the company of others. She loved music and dancing, going to church, sewing and crafts, playing cards (and winning!), cooking and baking. She will always be remembered by those closest to her for her amazing boxes of cookies she gave as Christmas presents; and for the huge family gatherings at her house where the food, fun and love flowed from her in abundance. Survivors include three children, Jean Luc (Linda) of Champlain, NY; Richard (Gail) of Yuma, AZ; and Louise Schmidt (Glenn) of Hudson,FL; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Houle of Forsyth,GA; six grandchildren, Richard Houle II; Megan and Katie Houle (Eric Wilcox); Luc (Sarah Alderman); Jesse (Keri); and David Jr. (Alison). Two step-granddaughters, Carrie Sharn (Thomas) and Nicole Quenelle; three great-grandchildren, William and Allison Houle, and Kiernan Houle; four step great-grandchildren, Lily, Patrick, Maggie, and Sabrina; a sister-in-law, Lizette Guindon; brother-in-law, Lionel Cote; and brother-in-law, Marcel Houle (Aline); and many loved cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her son, David (2015); an infant granddaughter, Carole (1980)0; brothers, Jean Marie, Rock, Edouard, and Pierre Guindon; and five sisters, Marie Claire, Marie Jeanne, Madeleine, Rita, and Antoinette Guindon. A mass, funeral and interment will be held later in the spring at the Immaculate Conception Church, Keeseville, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Denise's name to St. Peter's Church, 7 Margaret St, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 with their Soup Kitchen specified on the donation. Denise's family would like to thank the staff at the Vilas Home in Plattsburgh for their kindness and care of Denise during these past two years of her life. Also the wonderful nursing staff on the 5th floor of CVPH who made sure she was comfortable and well cared for during her final days.
