Obituary of Karl F. Schweikert, III

Karl Fredrick Schweikert, III, 84, of the Telegraph Road, Peru, passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 20, 2020 at the UVM Health Network, CVPH in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh, April 19, 1936, the son of the late, Karl F Schweikert, II and Agnes (Keenan) Schweikert. Karl grew up in Peru and graduated from Peru Central School in 1955. He was a car enthusiast and began his auto body repair career working for his father's brother in Albany. Karl married Shirley Ann Wright on July 6, 1957 and they settled in Peru a few years later. Karl and Shirley then opened "K & S (Karl and Shirley) auto body works" and also began a snow removal business. In 1967 Karl took a position teaching auto repair for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) while continuing to run the businesses on the side. He also pursued higher education while working in 1975, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education from SUNY Oswego. He retired from BOCES in 1992. Karl enjoyed his family, spending many hours boating on Lake Champlain and camping throughout Canada and the United States. He belonged to a hunting camp where he enjoyed friendships, hunting and ATV adventures. He and Shirley spent time traveling in their retirement and wintered in Florida. Karl was a member of St. Augustine's Church, the Eagles, the Moose, and the Elk Clubs. He will be most remembered for being a devoted husband and father, having tireless energy, a great sense of humor, and being a mentor to his family and the community. He will be missed immensely. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Wright) Schweikert; two daughters, Sharisse Keetz of Providence Rhode Island, Trudy Thull and husband Doug of Waterford Connecticut; one son Karl Schweikert, IV of Peru New York; one sister, Mary Schweikert Davey; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 11 am in St. Augustine's Church. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Augustine' Church. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
