Obituary of Mary G. Islas

Mary G. Islas, 84, of State Route 374, Cadyville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren and the care of Hospice of the North Country. She was born in Ellenburg on March 7, 1936, the daughter of Karl and Grace (Emerson) Huggins. Mary grew up on the family farm in Ellenburg, New York. She attended Plattsburgh State University and went on to become a kindergarten teacher. She married Francis "Hawk" Islas on July 11, 1959 and later became a stay at home mother for her 3 children. Even after leaving her teaching position her love of children continued as she provided childcare in her home for family members, neighbors and friends. She loved her flower gardens and spending time outdoors year round. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, music and listening to WIRY radio. Her other favorite activities were playing pickleball at the community center in Dannemora, snowshoeing, garage sales and riding her 4-wheeler. Survivors include her daughters, Amy Islas and Sonya Page; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Islas; grandchildren, Joshua Murchison, Amber Murchison, Alex Page, Tate Islas, Mateo Islas, Emily Page and Tiara Islas; sisters, June Hanevy and Hilda Persons and their families; sisters-in-law, Gem Islas, Greta Islas and Mary Islas; brother-in-law, Eddie Islas; and several nieces and nephews. As well as long time friends, Joan Roberts and Patti Cormier. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Francis "Hawk" Islas; her son Ted Islas; and her sister, Inez Huggins. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, entombment in the Whispering Maples Memorial Mausoleum in Ellenburg, will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary G. Islas may be made to: Hospice of the North Country, 258 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers, 236-4747.
