Obituary of Joyce Marie Riggs

Joyce Marie Riggs, 78, of Elm Street, Peru, died unexpectedly on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at her home.

Joyce was born in Harrisville, NY on February 4th 1941. She was the daughter of James Dusharm and Mary(Baker) Dusharm. Joyce grew up in Harrisville and was raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Agnes and Alfred DeRosier. She graduated from Harrisville High School in 1958 and married the love her life Stanley G. Riggs in November of 1958. It was at that moment the 56 year adventure began.

Her journey with Stan took her down many paths. Her first was the mother to 4 children who adored her. She was amazing at this job and it was by far her favorite. The next road she travelled was that of a Coach's wife. She performed this role most admirably and only in the way other Coaches and their wives could understand. She was the consummate host to Coaches and athletes near and far for the Peru Wrestling Invitational Tournament. She and Stanley were true partners each and every year for this event that demonstrated their commitment to the sport and families that belonged. Adding to her life travels, were the years spent working at Peru High School. She connected with students and faculty who admired and appreciated all the capacities in which she served.

It was in her later years that she and Stan landed their best gig and that was as grandparents. Joyce would say she and Stan were blessed 8 times with the most beautiful granddaughters ever. This was a job they loved the most and enjoyed together for 27 years. Even without her Stan, she continued her role as an amazing grandmother. Two years ago, her road took an interesting curve and blessed her with twin great grandsons who called her Gigi. They face timed her every night, and they were a very bright beacon of love and light in her life.

Although time without her husband was difficult and painful, she lived every day spreading joy, being positive and loving and supporting all lucky enough to be in her life. Her granddaughters always appreciated her counsel that no matter how bad you feel, get up every day, put your face on and step out into the world. Joyce did this so well.

She is survived by her 4 children, Cameron (Marie) Riggs, Cass (Dale) Becker, Catrina Keyser (Gary), and Cara (Paul) Cuda; her beloved granddaughters, Alexandra (Shane) Zanetti, Katie Riggs, Corinne (Nate) Webb, Julianne Cuda (Tom Barnes), Caroline Cuda, Lindsey (Mike) Douglas, Cammey Keyser, and Lilley Keyser; great-grandsons, Cooper and Bennett Zanetti and Gabe Douglas; she was very blessed to call Wally and Gina Rickert "family" as they cared for her as if she was. She is survived by many nieces and nephews who she was proud to be "Aunt Joycie" to.

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Lani Hoffman, Peggy Riggs, Beryl Dusharm, and June Dusharm; and brother-in-law, Dale Riggs.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; brothers, Dale and Gary; sister-in-law, Cherie Clougher, Janet, Norma, and Mary Lou Riggs; and brothers-in-law, Winthrop, Preston, Ralston, Paul and Randy Riggs.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday, September 23, 2019 from Noon to 1 PM at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A celebration of her life will follow at 1 PM in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in God's Acre Cemetery in Peru.
