Obituary of Merlyn Dewey

Merlyn D. Dewey, 94, of the Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, died Wednesday, Nov. 28th, under the loving care of his family.

He was born in Governeur, N.Y. on April 5, 1924, the son of Herbert and Ellen Dewey. Merlyn attended Hermon High School and went to work at the age of thirteen to help his family during the depression. At seventeen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in the Troy and Brunswick area.

Over the years Merlyn worked for the Pal Blade Company, the NYS Correction Department in Dannemora, Republic Steel Corporation, and V.S. Jerry Heavy Equipment Repair. He retired in 1983 from the Plattsburgh Air Force Base where he was head mechanic of flight line fire trucks.

After retirement Merlyn worked for many years as water commissioner for the town of Saranac, and volunteered in a number of capacities for the Saranac United Methodist Church where he and his wife, Frances, were long term members.

Merlyn and Frances were married 66 years, and loved people, music, dancing, camping, golfing, and playing cards with friends. At their home in Saranac neighbors and friends were always welcome for an evening of games, storytelling, music, coffee, and Fran's famous apple pie.

Survivors include his sister, Jane Marshall of Pottstown, Pa., two daughters, Kathleen Baughn of Morrisonville; and Betty Casey and her husband, Bill, from Clifton Park; four grandchildren: Christopher Chase and his wife, Kristine, of Ft. Meyers, Fla. Jeremy Chase and his wife, Tara, of Cadyville, Katie Whelan and her husband Gregg, of Clifton Park and Ginny Casey and her husband, Seth, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren: Emma, Dylan, Drew, Chloe, Nicholas, Max and Lumin.

Merlyn was predeceased by his parents and his wife, two brothers: Kermit and Kendall, and two sisters, Joyce and Janice.

Calling hours will be held from one to three o'clock, Saturday, December 1st, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Saranac Independence Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Saranac United Methodist Church.
