Obituary of James Clark Mitchell, Jr.

James Clark Mitchell, Jr., 82, of Haven Lane, Peru, passed away in the early hours on Friday, October 26, 2018 from an extended illness.

He was born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1936, the son of James Clark, Sr. and Alice Lorraine (Murray) Mitchell.

Known to his family and friends as "Clark", he was a Professor of Education at SUNY Plattsburgh for many years instructing a multitude of student teachers. As a graduate of Penn State, Clark taught at various schools within the Pennsylvania education system. Following this, Clark moved to New Jersey to teach at the A. Harry Moore School with special needs students. He subsequently was invited by Dr. Angel, then President of SUNY Plattsburgh, to co-develop the interdisplinary, open-curriculum program within the Education Dept. Following this, Clark collaborated in the development of the Teacher Block Program.

As a automobile enthusiast, Clark loved talking about his experience designing, building and driving his "Macaroni Monza" which he created himself. He enjoyed driving the open-cockpit car to the annual Keene Valley Mountain Climb as well as the Antique Automobile Rally at Watkins Glen. Clark was proud to show his car at numerous concours and vintage events including: Amelia Island, Cars of the Milwaukee Masterpiece and Hemmings Concours at Saratoga Springs. Clark's automobile was donated to the Grice Clearfield Community Museum in Clearfield, PA for everyone to enjoy. As an avid photographer, he always found a unique perspective to record his view. His photography was displayed in a variety of art shows.

Left to cherish the memory of Clark are, his loving wife of 43 years, Ann Mitchell of Peru; children, Kimberly Mitchell Thomas, Carolyn Mitchell McCall, Margot Hathaway Clifford, Peter Grosskopf, Christie Grosskopf Cochran, Joanne "Jo" Courtney, and Jake Rock; and his sister, Virginia (Mitchell) Frelin of Grore City, PA.

He was predeceased by his parents.

At Clark's request there will be no public calling hours. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
