Obituary of Jocile E. Irwin

Jocile E. Irwin, 87, of the Clark Road, Peru, died peacefully after a long illness on September 24th at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the North Country.

She was born in Albany, September 15, 1931, the daughter of Joseph Warren Esmond and Mircile (Armstrong) Esmond. For most of her childhood, Jocile lived in the greater Albany area until she moved to Plattsburgh to continue her higher education at Plattsburgh Teacher's College earning a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics Education; subsequently she graduated with a Master's Degree in Education.

She married Frank Richard Irwin, December 22, 1950 in Plattsburgh. Frank predeceased her June 15, 2016, following 65 years of devoted marriage.

Jocile was an educator and taught Home Economics at Ausable Valley Central School for 31 years prior to retiring in 1986. Teaching was her calling, she was loved by many students who remember her fondly to this day.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for over 50 years. She played an essential role in growing the Plattsburgh branch throughout the years.

Jocile had a beautiful mind that was constantly searching for knowledge. Her passion for history, genealogy, theology and nature was only overshadowed by her true gift of simply helping people. And she did help so many.

Left to cherish the memory of Jocile are her children: Jocile A. Irwin, Londa L. Irwin, and Lyn McIlroy (son-in-law.) Frank E. Irwin and Marla Irwin (daughter-in-law.) Grandchildren: Raina Sleeman, Rex Sleeman (grandson-in-law), Laura Ward, Brittany Irwin, and Collen Irwin. And one great granddaughter, Laura's daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Waldron. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

At Jocile's request there will be no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29th at 2 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 26 Dennis Avenue Plattsburgh. Private burial will be held in the Irwin Family Cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country.
