Obituary of John G. Hogan

John G. "Jack" Hogan, 85, of the Barney Downs Road in Peru, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 31, 2018 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country.

He was born in Binghamton on November 18, 1932, the son of James and Margaret (O'Neil) Hogan.

Jack grew up in Rensselaer, N.Y. and attended St. John's Academy. Upon graduating he enlisted in the Navy. In 1954 he married Elizabeth Best, his bride of 64 years who has the patience of a saint. In 1968 Jack and Betty moved their young family to Peru, N.Y. With hard work, an independent spirit and a wee bit of Irish luck, he founded J. Hogan Refrigeration, his family business that he proudly operated with his son, daughter and son-in-law, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Some of Jack's happiest times were spent at the Plumadore Club enjoying the company of members and guests as they discussed hunting, fishing, and politics over a steak dinner and a cold beer.

As the North Country's no. 1 wrestling fan, Jack encouraged kids on all teams to wrestle tough. He was especially proud of Mike as both a wrestler and a coach. In recent years he could be heard from the bleachers offering encouraging words to his grandsons, Patrick and Colin.

Left to cherish the memory of Jack are his wife, Betty; his daughters Karen Curtin (Dennis) and Susan Bonner (Dan) and son Mike Hogan (Julie) as well as his grandchildren; Jon, Ethan (Emily), Lizzi (Ian), Connor, Katherine (Kyle), Patrick, Anna and Colin and a special great grandson, Arlo. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Karin Fein and sister-in-law, Nancy Hogan; as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by Shamus, the 8th Hogan Labrador retriever.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brother James Hogan; his sister Margie Barnhart; brothers-in-law Roger Barnhart and Robert Best; his mother-in-law Irene Best; and a nephew Roger Barnhart.

Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, from 4 to 7 PM at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11 AM at St. Augustine's Church, 3035 Main Street, Peru, with the Rev. Alan D. Shnob, parish priest, celebrating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
