Obituary of Dana Davis
Dana C. Davis (Big D), 75, of the Brand Hollow Road, Peru, died Thursday, November 16, 2017 at his home in the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country.
He was born in Plattsburgh, New York on May 22, 1942, the son of Truman and Helen (Lewis) Davis. Dana grew up in Peru and graduated from Peru Central School in 1960. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1964. He later graduated from Champlain College of Burlington, Vermont with an Associate's Degree in business administration.
Dana started his professional career at IBM Essex Junction, VT where he worked for 10 years. But Dana felt the strong pull of the family business and moved home to Peru to work side by side with his father Truman as co-owner and operators of Davis Motor Sales, Inc. Davis Motor Sales was a centerpiece of the Town of Peru. Not only was it a place of business, it was a meeting place for family and friends alike. During that time and for many years after, it was very common to see local cars sporting the recognizable Davis Motor Sales sticker. After reluctantly selling the car dealership in 1990, Dana began a new career with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Rouses Point. He spent 10 years at Pfizer, and as was his trademark, he found himself meeting many new people and making equally as many new friends.
Beyond work, Dana served the community of Peru in the mid-nineties as a five-year member of the Peru Central School board of education. He believed strongly in providing the best possible education for the children of the community and worked hard on their behalf.
His primary passion was spending time with family. He enjoyed an idyllic marriage with his wife Dianne; they were truly best friends in life. Dana spent thousands of hours over the years at hockey rinks, race tracks, and countless other venues with his two boys Dana and Eric, who idolized him and considered him to be their hero. In his later years, Dana provided incredible love to his grandchildren whom all thought the world of him.
Dana's favorite hobbies were NASCAR, cruising the streets in his custom t-bucket, deer hunting, landscaping his property to perfection, and going out for coffee. Dana followed NASCAR closely and knew by memory the name of every NASCAR winner from 1968 forward. Many recall Dana and grandchildren cruising the Peru Fireman's Field Day parade in his t-bucket. He loved the solitude of the forest and spent many peaceful fall days in tree stands admiring nature and reveling in the sound of silence. During the warmer months, one could typically see "Big D" making the rounds on his riding lawnmower, ensuring that not a single blade of grass was out of place. Dana never met a coffee shop he didn't love. In these shops and on the social circuit he was a mainstay, chatting up with friends and enjoying life.
Dana was widely loved by all who met him. He had a magnetic personality and he lit up every room he entered. His smile, laughter, and many stories will be cherished and fondly remembered by all.
Left to cherish the memory of Dana are his wife of 50 years, Dianne (Giroux) Davis, who he married on February 11, 1967; his two sons, Dana Paul and wife, Tammy, and Eric "Fluff" Davis and companion, Christine Wood; beloved grandchildren, Dalton, Madison, Dane, Daxx, and Stevie; siblings, Roxy Davis and Gary Davis and wife Sarah; sister-in-law, Joanne Davis; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Davis.
Calling hours will be held Monday, November 20, 2017 from 5 to 7 PM. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Elmore SPCA animal shelter.
