John F. Spence Keeseville - John F. Spence, 79, of the Soper Road, Keeseville died Friday, August 22, 2008 at his home. He was born in Paterson, New Jersey, February 26, 1929 the son of John F. and Margaret J. (Savastano) Spence. John joined the United States Navy in 1946 at the age of 17. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, then aboard the USS Bremerton as a gunner. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He later moved to New York State and became a correction officer. He worked at Sing Sing and Great Meadows prior to transferring to Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. He retired in 2002 following 21 years of service. Survivors include his sister, Maureen Spence Lattrelle of Keeseville; one niece, Cheryl and husband Robert Clairmont of Burlington, Vermont; nephews, Robert and wife Verity Lattrelle of Burlington, Vermont, James and wife Debbie Lattrelle of Beekmantown, and Bryan and wife Kristine Spence of Clermont, Florida; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Margaret Clairmont of Burlington, Vermont, Joshua and Sarah Lattrelle of Beekmantown, and Christopher Lattrelle of Burlington, Vermont. He was predeceased by his father in 1968; his mother in 2005; and a brother, James T. Spence, of Port Kent, in 1997. Calling hours will be held at Sunday, August 24, 2008 from 4 to 7pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton Street, Keeseville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, August 25, 2008 at 11am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Keeseville with Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant, pastor, celebrating. Committal prayers, full military honors, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice of Essex County or Masses through the Catholic Community of Keeseville.
