Sam was a popular and well loved man. In his early years he enjoyed little more than a good weekend of hunting, a fun day fishing, or just spending time at his camp with family and friends. Sam was also a very skilled welder and carpenter. He was also an avid motorcycle rider, and was very proud of his 1980 FLH Shovelhead Harley Davidson. He loved nothing more than to have friends and family over to the garage for drinks and a good laugh, and a night of memories made.

In June of 2011 he was married to Penni Smith at her parents home in Plattsburgh. The two of them enjoyed spending time at the American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh, which he was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion.
