Roger C. Long

Roger C. Long, 67, of the Fuller Road in Peru, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017, at his home in the loving care and comfort of his family. His passing was so peaceful, one might think he had taken a few steps into Heaven.

He was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, September 19, 1950, the son of Herbert and Mae (Preston) Long.

Roger attended Saranac Central School where he excelled in basketball and later on he passed that love to his son Roger Thomas. After attending SUNY Farmingdale and SUNY Cortland, he married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Cromie. Roger and Clinton Morse founded Keeseville Hardware, later named Adirondack Hardware and expanded to three additional locations in Willsboro, Malone and Rouses Point. While Roger continued to enjoy playing softball and basketball in local leagues, he truly loved hunting and his time with dear friends at camp. Roger passed that love of sports and outdoors to his children and grandchildren through countless adventures treking through the woods, on the back of his four wheeler and cheering them on from the sidelines. Roger and Darlene cherished time and laughter with family. Their Christmas Eve parties became a holiday highlight and a place for him to enjoy his sons-in-law with Scotch and a game of Pitch.

Roger enjoyed the quiet as much as the commotion and spending time at peace with people he loved was as beautiful as the conversation. He was thoughtful and giving, a humble man who never gave up on people, and so, in these past few years, few gave up on him. His memory will be cherished by many, and in the words of his nephew Micheal Millea, "Uncle Roger was the perfect uncle. He loved me, challenged me, expected the best from me, and taught me so many lessons about being a man." His daughters, nieces, granddaughters agree, but would add, "The lessons prompted us to be better people."

Left to cherish the memory of Roger is his wife of 46 years, Darlene (Cromie) Long; their children, James and Rosemary (Long) Manchester, their children Emily and Garrett, Roger and Carrie Long, their children Cora, Reece, Averie and Charlie, and Derek and Alison (Long) Rosenbaum and their children Connor and Madeline. Roger is also survived by his siblings William Long, Robert Long, Marjorie Heatherton, Richard Lavarnway, and Linda June. Roger had many cherished nieces and nephews as well.

In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by his sister Yvonne (Long) Smith, his step mother Dorothy Long, his brother George Lavarnway, his beloved godson and nephew Thomas Millea, and his father and mother-in-law, William and Eileen Cromie.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, November 26, 2017, from 1 to 3 PM, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 27, 2017, at 10 AM, at St. Augustine's Church, Peru, with the Rev. Alan D. Shnob, parish priest, celebrating. Entombment will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Patent Road, Peru.

Donations in memory of Roger C. Long may be made to ALS Raising Hope Foundation. Roger was so grateful to all those who worked wholeheartedly to support research so that others will never have to travel this road with ALS.

Roger and Darlene were blessed with family, friends and those who helped with his care who became family and friends throughout his eight years fighting this disease. They eased the pain, gave them much comfort, and showed them the best of humanity.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 643-9055.
