Melvin E. Lawrence
Plattsburgh - Melvin E. Lawrence, 98, formerly of the Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh.

He was born in AuSable Forks, August 10, 1912, the son of Willis O. and Margaret (Madden) Lawrence.

Melvin served in the United States Army during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was employed at base supply on the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base for many years.

He was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post 20 in Plattsburgh and also a member of the Peru VFW Post 309. Melvin received the Legionnaire of the Year Award in 1995. Melvin was an avid golfer, bowler, and boater and especially enjoyed spending time at his camp on Willsboro Bay.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bill and Faye Lawrence of Plattsburgh, and Allen Lawrence of Tamarack, Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Richard Wildman of East Hadley, Ma.; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Philip Lawrence of Plattsburgh and formerly of Willsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Dorothea M. (Bromley) Lawrence, February 13, 1975; and two brothers, Lyle and Roger Lawrence.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 10am at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru with Rev. Virginia M. Pierce, retired, officiating. Full military honors will follow outside the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in the Peru Cemetery Inc.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Seton Catholic Capital Campaign.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
