Polly Ann Crowningshield
Whallonsburg - Retired Postmaster Polly Ann Crowningshield, 80, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Heath Care.

Born in Essex, May 15, 1930, the daughter of Gordon and Mae (Marshall) Perry, she graduated from Essex High School, one of four students. Classmates were Rick Williams, Hilda Hayward, and Mary Sheehan. She worked on the family farm in Essex until she was 17, then began a lifelong career with the United States Postal Service as a temporary Postmaster at AuSable Chasm, then at the Crater Club in Essex. She became Whallonsburg Postmaster in 1960 and retired the office in 1990.

She was a life-member of the Whallonsburg Fire Dept., Whallonsburg Grange 954, and the U.S. Postmasters' Association. Her flower gardens and her pets were her passions.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Karen (Lewis) Crowningshield of Whallonsburg; "granddaughter", Toni Pulsifer and companion, Daniel McCray of Willsboro; two sisters, Shirley Richter of Essex, and Mrs. Ed (Linda) Young of Baton Rouge, La; sister-in-law, Jane Perry of Essex; nieces, Deborah Daly, Laura Bridge, Joan Foil and Pearl Mangum; nephews, Robert "Bob" Perry, Dan Benoit and Wayne Fountain; and cousin, Sue Smith Cockren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold N. Crowningshield; parents; brother, Bill Perry; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Richter.

Calling hours are 2 - 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 at Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru and 10 - 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2010 at United Church of Christ, 7580 Court Street, Elizabethtown. The funeral will follow at the church. The Rev. Fred C. Shaw will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Burt Cemetery in Whallonsburg.
